Bio

Dr. Stephen Bates earned his medical degree from McMaster University in 1979 and entered a residency in Family Medicine. In 1984, he completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and began his general practice in Obstetrics & Gynecology, including colposcopy, laser surgery of the genital tract, hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation and operative laparoscopy. In 1994 he completed his MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University.

In addition to his practice in Brantford, Dr. Bates has dedicated his career to education, working as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. 

Awards

His teaching of health professionals at all levels has earned him numerous awards including the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Canada) Educator of the Year Award in 2006, the Faculty of Health Sciences Undergraduate MD Program Outstanding Preceptor Award in 2007 and the 2008 CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

  • Study design to assess non-hysterectomy surgical therapy for menorrhagia
  • Quality Improvement in medical practice
  • Teaching of health professional at all levels
